I'm Joe Brown. I've taught science for twenty years, and my classroom is 111 acres.

Why outside?

For more than twenty years I've taught science. I was the Boone County Nature School's first teacher, on board before the building opened in August 2024 on 111 donated acres with a council house, a weather station, and an observatory. When the outdoors is the classroom every day, you learn fast what actually works with thirty kids, a creek, and a lesson objective, and what only works in a brochure.

Kids don't need less school. They need more of it outside, with their hands on something real. The families trying to pry their kids off screens already know this. Teachers just need a plan that works on a Tuesday.

What I've done

Truman State

BA in Biology, then an MAE in Unified Sciences.

Southern Boone

Science teacher at Southern Boone Middle School in Ashland, Missouri. For five years running I taught natural-resource classes built around Missouri's aquatic life: gear, knot tying, casting, fish identification, regulations, population management, dissection (yes, the kids clean the fish), pond ecology, invasive species, and water-quality monitoring. My classes ran Stream Team cleanups and monitored the headwater creek in the park next door.

2011

Missouri Chapter of the American Fisheries Society Citizen's Award, given to people outside the aquatic profession who make a substantial contribution to Missouri's aquatic resources. Mine was for introducing students to them.

2022–23

First teacher at the Boone County Nature School, before the building existed: more than 3,000 student visits to the 111-acre site in the Waters-Russell Unit of Three Creeks Conservation Area.

2023

Dedicated the council house with Columbia Public Schools and the Missouri Department of Conservation, and told the Columbia Daily Tribune the site would welcome 8,000 to 10,000 students within a year.

2024

Featured in Missouri Conservationist on place-based education. Grand opening in August of the $7 million, 8,230-square-foot school with its council house, weather station, and observatory; every Columbia Public Schools fifth-grader spent eight days on site that first year. Toured and presented the school to the Columbia Audubon Society with Ragan Webb in October.

Now

2,200 fifth-graders from all six Boone County districts, seven days each across fall, winter, and spring, through a curriculum that runs from Discovering Our Place to Agents for Change. Fishing in the fall, orienteering in the spring, monarchs, maple syrup, frogs, and fossils in between. Certified NASP archery instructor and Missouri Department of Conservation Discover Nature Fishing volunteer.

Since 2022

251 how-to videos on YouTube as Mancycle DIY: 10,300 subscribers, four million views.

How I work

Practical over pretty. If a lesson needs a budget, a bus, or a perfect day, it doesn't go in the library.

Honest about failure. Every lesson includes what went wrong the first time I taught it.

Standards are a feature. Outdoor learning doesn't need an exemption from the curriculum. It needs a crosswalk.
